Don’t you sometimes need a Forrest Gump in your life?

This blog post revisits the value of attitude and sincerity in life through the movie Forrest Gump.

The movie Forrest Gump begins with a man’s monologue. This man is the film’s protagonist, named Forrest Gump. As he reminisces about his life, appearing like an ordinary man living in a small town, we come to understand just how extraordinary his life has been. Forrest Gump appears utterly ordinary, yet the events he experiences are extraordinary, and he lives through them with remarkable simplicity. His monologue is sometimes humorous, sometimes containing profound insights into life. As listeners, we become engrossed in Gump’s words and witness how the small events he describes gradually become pivotal turning points in his life.
Forrest Gump appears in childhood with a physical disability affecting his legs. The physical challenges he faced from a young age were not only about his body but also about the stares and judgments of those around him. He endured constant teasing and bullying from other children, leading him to realize early on that he was different from others. Yet Forrest did not despair over this; instead, it fueled his determination to overcome it. Forrest’s mother imparted an important lesson to him: “Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get.” This phrase provides a crucial clue throughout the film about how Forrest views and navigates the world. His mother constantly encouraged him, reminding him that he was no different from other children. Thanks to his mother’s teachings, Forrest never saw himself as different from non-disabled people and gained the confidence that he could accomplish anything.
Forrest Gump begins running while wearing leg braces, a scene that is highly symbolic in the film. Despite wearing the braces, Forrest keeps running. He ran his hardest to escape situations where other children bullied him, and in the process, his running skills gradually improved. Initially, it was simply to avoid the bullying, but over time, Forrest began to find joy in running itself. This becomes a crucial turning point that later leads him to join a football team based on his running ability.
Over time, Forrest’s running skills become vastly superior to others, and eventually, his running catches the eye of a scout from a professional football team. Here, Forrest’s life enters a new phase once again. He joins a professional football team, though Forrest never actually harbored dreams of playing football. He simply enjoyed running. However, his exceptional running ability was one of the essential skills required for a football player, making him a crucial figure on the team. Forrest builds a highly successful career in football and begins to attract significant attention from many people.
But Forrest’s story doesn’t end there. He soon faces a new challenge: the Vietnam War. Amidst this massive historical event, Forrest enters another phase of his life. Enlisted in the military, Forrest gives his all to his duties on the battlefield as well. Though war was a brutal environment, Forrest never lost his sincerity. He always gave his utmost effort to his assigned tasks and genuinely connected with his comrades. This dedication earned him great trust not only from his comrades but also from his superiors.
When Forrest’s unit was ambushed by the enemy, he used his exceptional running ability to rescue his wounded comrades. This brought him great honor; he received a medal from the nation and became a famous figure. But for Forrest, the important thing wasn’t the honor or the award. He had simply done what he could. His selfless actions made him more than just a hero. The courage and dedication he displayed deeply moved many, and he became a beloved figure among the people.
Furthermore, Forrest met his dear friend Bubba during the war. Bubba suggested a shrimp business to Forrest, which later became a crucial stepping stone to his success as an entrepreneur. After the war, Forrest accepted Bubba’s proposal and started the shrimp business, which provided him with another opportunity for success. Forrest achieved remarkable results in business too, thanks to his sincerity and perseverance. He always did his best within the circumstances given to him, and this led him to success.
Looking back on Forrest Gump’s life, he never acted with grand ambitions. He started running simply to escape bullying, and his enlistment in the military was due to the circumstances of the times. Yet Forrest always gave his best within the situations he faced. Through his effort and sincerity, he achieved great success without even realizing it, enriching his life. Forrest’s life offers us an important lesson. That is, doing your best in the circumstances you’re given is a crucial key to success.
This film isn’t simply the success story of one man. It’s a story showing how Forrest lived the life he was given and what values he held as he viewed the world. He was always kind to others and never lost his positive attitude, no matter the situation. The attitude toward life he demonstrated deeply moved many people, and I too realized a great deal after watching this film. Forrest Gump became a significant turning point in my own short life, and since then, I’ve come to take life more seriously. Now, whenever I feel myself becoming complacent, I rewatch this film, and each time, I find new inspiration in Gump’s example. I encourage readers who feel their own lives have grown complacent to seek fresh inspiration through Forrest Gump.
