What is Johnny Suede, wandering in search of love and shoes, trying to tell us?

In this blog post, I’ll discuss Tom DiCillo’s debut film, ‘Johnny Suede’, focusing on Johnny—a character who appears as if marking the beginning of a legend—his journey to find shoes and love, and the film’s overall awkward and offbeat charm.

Tom DiCillo and ‘Johnny Suede’: Encountering the Origin of a Legend

It’s always fascinating to witness the first steps of a legend—the very beginning of history. And whenever you uncover even a single piece of trivia or behind-the-scenes story, it’s undeniable that you feel a distinct sense of closeness to that legendary figure, even if you’ve never met them in person.
As it happens, there’s someone who is truly a pioneer and whose career can rightfully be called a piece of history. That person is Tom DiCillo, who majored in film at NYU and, as an alumnus, made his debut in the film industry working on the cinematography for Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Stranger Than Paradise’. Looking at DiCillo’s filmography, it feels less like the coming-of-age story of a rising master and more like a fully formed style that has gradually been refined. From the very beginning, he has charted a course that is somewhat niche, rebellious, and far removed from clichés.
His debut film, ‘Johnny Suede’, also sheds light on something with such certainty that it’s hard to believe it’s his first work. Ah, but enough of that—the film is noteworthy simply because it marks Brad Pitt’s first commercial leading role, one that has since become nothing short of legendary.

Johnny’s Shoes and Love: A Story That Began Like a Myth

From the very beginning, as if marking the start of a myth, the film suddenly raises the question of where and how this character has lived—a mystery we can’t quite fathom—and resolves to follow him. Furthermore, his appearance—his exaggerated, tightly styled hair, his outfits—everything is enough to make him extraordinary. Except for one thing: the “shoes” he doesn’t like.
As if the heavens had heard Johnny’s desperate longing for shoes, a pair of suede shoes suddenly falls from the sky. As if by fate, they fit perfectly. These mysterious, unidentified shoes were a sight for sore eyes for Johnny. He even changes his name. Now that he’s got his “Suede” shoes—that is, suede leather shoes—it’s time to change his name to Johnny Suede and begin his legend.
But of course, reality isn’t that easy. Just as he starts practicing hard to become a singer, his landlord demands the rent, and he ends up having even his guitar taken away. At this moment, the movie delivers a nice little musing on love.

“I just didn’t have love. Love will be enough.”

In a way, the overarching theme of this movie is ultimately love, love, and more love. As is the case with many movies, there have been far too many people in the world who have staked their lives on this seemingly useless, superficial emotion. For that reason alone, this emotion possesses a needlessly sublime power.
In any case, Johnny wants to find and possess love just as he sought his shoes, and he mistakenly believes that love is the one thing he’s missing. By now, this repetitive pattern seems far too foolish and clumsy to be called a journey.

The Film’s Quirky Individuality Amid the Clumsiness

As such, the film is generally clumsy. The characters are clumsy, and some of the plot elements are clumsy as well, making it difficult to tell whether this is intentional or simply a clumsy first step for the director’s debut film. In any case, because this clumsiness runs rampant from start to finish, the film’s indie-style character definitely succeeds in establishing itself.
Johnny, having failed at so many things, meets a woman just as he did when he found his shoes.

And while it seems as though they’re about to fall in love rapidly, we—or rather, our Johnny—who love to overthink things and have clear ideals, want to keep denying that fact.
“I’m only acting this way because I’m a lone wolf, because I’m a superhuman artist.” And one day, I’ll be that “cool guy” like Elvis Presley hanging on the wall in Johnny’s room! I’m too busy yearning for that. But there’s no helping the fact that he’s drawn to her. On the contrary, Johnny ends up flailing about because things aren’t going his way.
The hallucinatory dreams grow a bit more intense, and even his overactive mind begins to wilt and subside. Eventually, even a single shoe vanishes without a trace, and life didn’t flow the way he’d hoped.

A Life Left Unexplained, and Johnny Suede

DeCillo makes no attempt whatsoever to explain the shoe, the love, or anything else in the film. He doesn’t even provide plausibility. It just is.

“There are so many things in life that can’t be explained in words, aren’t there?”

he seems to say with a smile, appearing optimistic.
